The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) suffered embarrassment after announcing that its officers had “recently seized 2,000 counterfeit Apple AirPods from Hong Kong, valued at $398K,” only to find out that they were actually genuine OnePlus buds.
The agency also made a press release praising CBP officers for ‘protecting the American public from various dangers on a daily basis’. Saying that “the interception of these counterfeit earbuds is a direct reflection of the vigilance and commitment to mission success by our CBP officers daily.”
The CBP also put a Tweet announcing the seizure of the consignment that looks just like Apple Airpods, tweeting; “THAT’S NOT AN APPLE.” only to discover that they were indeed Apple products.

Bizzare still, the container of the package says they are OnePlus Buds! The shipment originated from Hong Kong and was seized at JFK on 31st August 2020, according to the press release.
OnePlus Buds are worth $79 each and 2,000 pieces would amount to $158,000, way less than the US Customs estimates of $398,000.
Probably, the officers were suspicious of the resemblance. Truthfully there are many counterfeit Apple Airpods in the market, however, many genuine buds share the same form factor. In this situation, Apple or its logo was not even on the packaging which clearly reads OnePlus buds.
Predictably, Twitter is currently trolling the US Customs.
