Apple is thinking of long-lasting battery life for the Airpods with a new optimised charging feature. It recently announced the feature of the iOS14 at the WWDC 2020 which will prolong the battery life in Airpods and ultimately its lifespan.

This feature is similar to the battery health management system it released earlier this year in macOS Catalina 10.15.5. iOS 14 will prolong your AirPods’ batteries by learning from you when you’d usually charge them and predicting when to stop charging them automatically.

Additionally, it will prevent the charge from sitting at full charge or 100% for extended periods. Instead, it will charge the Airpods in bits or stop the charge so as to resume later.

Optimised charging, which is just coming to AirPods, has been present in iPads, iPhones, MacBooks, and other Apple devices. Apple describes the feature in a pop-up that says;

“Optimized Battery Charging Enabled: To reduce battery aging, AirPods learn from your daily charging routine so they can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use them”.

Most Apple products, use a lithium-ion battery. Experts say that it is not beneficial to always keep lithium batteries at 100 percent charge. The battery life can be extended by reducing the number of times it is charged to full capacity.

Airpods give up to 5 hours of listening time and 3hours of talk time. However, with the charge in the case, this can be extended to 18 to 24 hours. Unlike other Apple, products, Airpods cannot have their battery replaced when they wear out. This has earned Apple criticism and the device branded as ‘disposable’.
