Apple’s new App Store rules permit game-streaming services like Microsoft xCloud or Google Stadia to have access to iOS or iPadOS but with one big condition. The rules allow developers like Microsoft to submit their games as separate apps individually, utilising its streaming technology.

The developers will be free to create a catalog-style app that collects and links out to all of the individual apps too. However, Microsoft thinks the new App Store rules will not be a pleasant experience for customers.

This remains a bad experience for customers. Gamers want to jump directly into a game from their curated catalog within one app just like they do with movies or songs, and not be forced to download over 100 apps to play individual games from the cloud. We’re committed to putting gamers at the center of everything we do, and providing a great experience is core to that mission,” a Microsoft spokesperson said to The Verge.

This means that every single game streamed to an iPhone or iPad from xCloud would be subject to Apple’s App Store rules, most notably the controversial 30 percent cut off in-app purchases. The cut which is also at the center of the row and legal battle between Apple and Epic Games has regulators in the US and EU circling.

Microsoft will instead go-ahead to launch its game streaming service, as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The streaming service formerly named xCloud will launch next week.

xCloud will be available in 22 countries beginning on 15th September 2020. However, it will only be available on Android smartphones and tablets, for now.
