YouTube rolls out new educational content features

YouTube is rolling out new products (features) for users to get more out educational contents on its platform. It is streamlined to improve experience for creators and viewers alike.

They include a new player feature to show content on popular education apps in a non-intrusive way.

“To improve the YouTube experience in educational environment, we are launching YouTube Player for Education — a new YouTube embedded player that shows content on commonly used education apps without distractions like ads, external links or recommendations,” Jonathan Katzman Director of Product Management at YouTube Learning wrote.

In its blog post, themed ‘The next chapter for Learning on YouTube’, the company claimed that the features are to allow learners go deeper into subjects. It would also assist creators in giving their contents structure.

The platform is introducing a query feature, aptly called Quizzes, to help viewers test their knowledge. It would roll out gradually for the rest of 2022 and should be available to every creator who has a Community tab — where a creator can set up a quiz.

Also, there is a coming feature for creators to make money via courses, although, this will have to wait until 2023 at least.

“Viewers who choose to buy a Course can watch the video ad-free and play it in the background. Courses will arrive first in the United States and South Korea in beta before expanding to more countries,” Katzman wrote.

YouTube partners with established edtech companies EDpuzzle, Purdue University and Purdue Global to offer these features. It hints that there are plans to bring in partners from other parts of the world as well.
