The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) reported that Google pays billions of dollars to phone makers like Apple and Samsung to maintain its search dominance.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the money is to the tune of being ‘enormous’, even though the particular amount was not included in the complaint.
“Google invests billions in defaults, knowing people won’t change them. They are buying default exclusivity because defaults matter a lot.” DOJ attorney Kenneth Dintzer said to the judge.
Monopoly in any industry is a source of concern for the DoJ, especially in tech, and the federal body has turned its sights on leading giants like Google. The case antitrust lawusit against the search company has been going for years now.

In the recent complaint, being preceded over by Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, Google is being accused of unethical maneuvering to maintain its top spot at the detriment of competitors like Bing, DuckDuckGo, and others. In fact, such is the dominance of Google that a very large percent of internet users have never used any other search engine ever.
However, Google’s attorney, John Schmidtlein, has argued that the DoJ is looking at the ‘Search industry’ the wrong way. Bing and DuckDuckGo are not the only competitors out there, which is why it seems that Google has monopoly. Schmidtlein has called on efforts to be directed at companies like Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others, to see just how many search queries they receive.
“You don’t have to go to Google to shop on Amazon. You don’t have to go to Google to buy plane tickets on Expedia. The fact that Google doesn’t face the same competition on every query doesn’t mean the company doesn’t face tough competition,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dintzer says that Google has deals with Apple, Motorola, and Samsung to stay ahead in the mobile space. Then, it contracts AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile in the service provider industry.
These deals have existed since the early 2000s, as Dintzer claimed.
