Video game spend in the US reached its highest point since 2010, according to research by NPD Group. Although the group does not give a reason for the increase, it is strongly believed that the COVID-19 pandemic and the shelter in pace orders are responsible for the astronomical spending on the venture.

As of June 2020, sales have reached $6.6 billion on hardware, software, and accessories. This is the highest total for the first six months in any year since video game spend reached $7 billion 10 years ago.

Matt Piscatella, a video game industry analyst with the NPD Group tweeted the report showing the huge figures.

Video game spend has been remarkably higher in 2020 compared to 2019. Sales in June specifically increased by 26% compared to the same month in 2019. Year-to-date spending across Video Game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards increased by 19% ($6.6 billion) compared to 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown is definitely aiding spending as this is not the first record 2020 has set for video game sales. US spending reached an all-time quarterly record earlier in the year as well.

New consoles from Sony (PS5) and Microsoft (Xbox Series X), which will launch later this year, will definitely increase those figures.
