A Swedish start-up, Tobii Technology is releasing eye trackers that could prove transformative for gamers. The technology is useful in detecting their eye movements while playing fast-paced games like Fortnite or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Apart from gaming, eye-tracking technology is also useful in medical fields. The technology helps people with conditions like autism, traumatic brain injuries and ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, communicate with others.

Tobii is a global leader in the production of eye trackers. The company makes its eye trackers for gamers and people with medical conditions as well.

The new Tobii Eye Tracker 5 comes with improved recalibration. The eye tracker uses an algorithm for following the eye’s patterns with a camera. This allows enabling the software to pinpoint the direction of a player’s gaze, thus, tracking patterns of behavior over time. It can also help track players’ eyes and the direction of their heads, thus, helping them determine their blind spots.

“If we lose your gaze, then we are much, much faster in finding your eyes again,” which helps with games such as “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” and others, Tobii’s head of gaming, Martin Lindgren at Tobii, told CNN.

The Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is made up of a series of sensors and two cameras. The sensors and cameras are either magnetically attached or mounted onto a monitor with its USB cable plugged in. The device will then register the players gaze by asking you to stare at specific points on the screen.

Many professional esports players already use eye-tracking technology. The teams can then take the raw data and interpret for more effective strategies in winning tournaments. Tobii released its Eye Tracker 5, in June 2020 and it costs around $229.
