Intel has announced that its Chief Engineering Officer Dr Venkata Murthy Renduchintala, will be leaving the company on 3rd August 2020. The chip maker on 27th July 2020 made the announcement concerning the executive in charge of most of its hardware.

Although Intel did not give a specific reason for Renduchintala’s departure, the announcement follows news that its next-gen 7nm chips are delayed until at least 2022.

This highlights the delay in the company’s 10nm processors as well. Both delays have seemingly stifled its advancements in the laptop industry in recent years. Intel also saw rival chip maker TSMC’s record a 10% increase in its share price while it is struggling.

Before joining Intel in February 2016, Renduchintala worked with rival chipmaker, Qualcomm. He was responsible for everything from the design to engineering and the manufacturing of Intel’s chips, he also headed the company’s other hardware manufacturing. Renduchintala’s jurisdiction was put under one group, the Technology, Systems Architecture, and Client Group.

Now, that division will be split up into five different teams. The teams will comprise of technology development, manufacturing, design engineering, architecture, and supply chain management. The leaders of each group are to report directly to Intel CEO Bob Swan.

At its most recent earnings call, Swan, in reporting the lapse in the production of its 7-nanometer chips also mentioned a ‘contingency plan’. The plan could involve contracting the production of the chips to other companies with TSMC a likely beneficiary. The Taiwanese semiconductor giant already produces chips for Apple, Qualcomm, AMD among others.
