Twitter Explains Why It Branded Donald Trump’s Tweets Amidst Rumours Of An Executive Order

In response to reports about a possible executive order from the United States President, Twitter has offered an explanation as to why it branded Trump’s tweet.

We had reported that Donald Trump had threatened to take action against Twitter following the social media platform tampering with his tweet. In his words, he had mentioned possibly shutting it down. He added that the company was stifling freedom of speech.

In response to this disagreement, many people have hinted at a possible executive order from the president against Twitter. While there is no certainty of this happening; Twitter has explained why it deemed it fit to attach fact-checking links to Trump’s post.

In a tweet on 28th May 2020, Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety), the arm of the company that deals with privacy issues, posted:

“We added a label to two @realDonaldTrump Tweets about California vote-by-mail plans as part of our efforts to enforce our civic integrity policy. We believe those Tweets could confuse voters about what they need to do to receive a ballot and participate in the election process.”

The Civic integrity policy mentioned in the statement is one of Twitter’s users’ agreement policy. It tells users that they are not allowed to “use the company’s services for the purpose of manipulating or interfering in elections or other civic processes”.

While the debate is still going on; the company’s CEO tweeting from his official account (@jack) mentioned that he is “ultimately” accountable for the firm’s action. He further explained that the branding of the President’s tweets does not make Twitter an “arbiter of truth”. He added:

“Our intention is to connect the dots of conflicting statements and show the information in dispute so people can judge for themselves. More transparency from us is critical so folks can clearly see the why behind our actions.”

Many reports claim that Donald Trump will issue the executive order before the end of today, Thursday 28th May 2020. While many others continue to argue that as a private company, Twitter is within its rights. At the moment, both the President and the company are in a delicate position.
