Dear Twitter User, See Five Things Trump’s Executive Order May Mean To You

After the disagreement between the United States President, Donald Trump and social media giant, Twitter, the president has gone ahead to sign an executive order targeting them. As a Twitter user, we explain five ways that this development affects you.

First, if you have not caught up on what the whole disagreement is about, you can check this article for what transpired between Trump and Twitter: Will Donald Trump Shutdown Facebook And Twitter Ahead Of November Elections 2020?

The short explanation of the drama is that Twitter added fact-checking links to Trump’s Tweets on vote-by-mail; then the President had seen it as impeding free speech and threatened to take action against them. Now, according to several news sources, the President on Thursday night passed a new order.

In brief, Donald Trump’s executive order targets the United States Communications Decency Act. It wants social media companies to be responsible for their users’ posts. This aims to overturn the immunity that social media platforms have enjoyed.

Before now, the afore-mentioned Act recognises that social media platforms are not responsible for their users’ contents. They only have to act and remove such contents after they notice them or they are reported. Especially if the content flouts their policies.

The executive order is in effect saying that if the platform edits, removes or blocks content that is not directly contradicting their policies; then they lose their immunity as the law affords them. It is important to note that executive orders are subject to many legal processes that can take over a year yo complete.

However, if Donald Trump’s executive order becomes law; here are five ways it can affect Twitter and other social media users:

— Posts would go through reviews before they go up. This would likely affect the speed of passing information.

— Several contents would be banned as the platform would now be regarded as a publisher that is responsible for its actions.

— If Twitter mellows on its control of content, users would be seeing more sensitive content such as; graphic, harassment, racist and violent posts.

— In line with the above, the platform may become the center of politically motivated posts and content.

— There would be more frequent changes in policies and terms of use that would be difficult for users to keep up with.

In the end, the main purpose of Twitter’s existence may be defeated. At the moment, nothing has been made into law. Trump’s executive order is still in the pipeline but Twitter as well as other social media platforms would be buckling up for legal tussles in the future.
