Last night, a massive explosion rocked the city of Akure, Ondo State.
The explosion which happened on Akure-Owo expressway tore up a large part of the road leaving a huge crater hole in it’s wake. Nearby houses were also destroyed in the explosion.
To dispel speculations surrounding the explosion, The Governor of Ondo State, Gov Rotimi Akeredolu has released an official statement via his Twitter page. In the statement, the governor revealed that a vehicle convoy transporting explosives was the cause of the explosion. His statement reads:
“I have been briefed by the security chiefs that in the early hours of Saturday March 28th, a vehicle in a convoy transporting explosives to a storage facility in a neighbouring state developed a fault while in transit along the Akure Owo Road about 2km from the Akure Airport.”

“Security personnel and other individuals transporting the ordinances noticed smoke from the vehicle. After several attempts to extinguish the resulting fire failed, the vehicle and its consignment ignited causing a massive explosion that was felt in Akure and its environs” he continued
“Presently, efforts are being made to ascertain if there are casualties. Following my visit to the scene, I have directed that the area be cordoned off to allow the explosive ordinance department/bomb squad to extricate the vehicle buried underground”
He added that while it’s still unclear if they’re more explosives yet to detonate, the place has been cordoned off and everything well and under control.
He enjoined everyone to stay calm as they continue to observe the coronavirus imposed self-isolation.
