Google launches three gaming Chromebook laptops

Google partnered with three laptop makers to launch new gaming Chromebook laptops: Acer’s Chromebook 516 GE, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook, and Asus’ Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip.

The laptops do not feature the necessary hardware to qualify as gaming machines but there is a workaround — they launch with Nvidia’s GeForce Now service preinstalled. This service typically turns regular PCs into gaming laptops.

The Chromebooks are basically optimised for cloud gaming and despite the imminent demise of Stadia, there are other gaming services to enjoy online, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Not much stands out that makes the launched Chromebooks unique because the GeForce Now service can work on other machines as well.

However, in terms of specs, the Chromebook 516 GE and IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook feature flashy RGB keyboards, while the WASD keys of the Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip is color-blocked.

In addition, the Chromebook 516 GE and IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook displays offer refresh rates of 120Hz, and the Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip’s display has a 144Hz refresh rate.

According to The Verge’s report, the PCs are priced as follows:

— Acer’s Chromebook 516 GE cost $649.99
— Lenovo’s IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook cost $599
— Asus’ Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip price is not yet available.

Looking at the pricing, it seems that the aim of the makers is to sell affordable gaming laptops, strictly for cloud gaming. Yet, when you factor in the cost of GeForce Now (and its RTX 3080 tier), the pricing for the cloud gaming service, and even the quality of internet tp enjoy cloud gaming at 60fps, the pricing does not make much sense.
