Google Docs testing embed support from other apps

Google Docs is testing a new feature that lets users embed files or apps and directly edit them on the platform. For now, the feature is only open to third-party developers and will come to other users by January 2023.

According to The Verge, you just need to type “@” along with the file or app name you are looking for. Then, it will appear on Google Docs, and you can edit them there.

Some scenarios where this feature comes in handy includes Asana users being able to manage their tasks on the platform. Also, Miro users will be able to see visual previews, while Figma users will be able to see their boards.

The feature allows Google Workspace level up to competitors like Notion and Coda, who already support the feature. In addition to Docs, the features could also come to other tools like Slides and Sheets in the company’s arsenal.

Besides the documents aspect of the Google for business offering, there is also a new feature coming to Meet. Developers are getting access to build meeting controls into their apps and embed their tech into Meet as well.

So, when it rolls out for every user, you can edit a Figma project with a colleague directly from a Meet call. The feature will also be available for its other collaboration platforms Chat and Spaces.

These features are possible courtesy of a tech that Google announced at its Cloud Next event in 2022, called smart chips. It basically supports embedding third-party features into Google platforms.

The aim here is to improve collaboration and a seamless working experience without users having to go from window to window all the time.
