General Motors, owners of automobile brands Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac, created a new division called GM energy, which will challenge Tesla’s clean energy business.
GM Energy will build and sell everything related to clean energy, from batteries, chargers, solar panels, and software. The new business targets residential and commercial customers. Also, it will supply the accessories that its electric vehicle arm needs.
In a statement, Travis Hester, the head of EV at General Motors, mentioned that the energy generation and storage equipment market has the potential to reach $150 billion, and his company wants a chunk of that wealth. Not just that, it will go a long way in establishing the brand as not just an EV maker but a supplier of products needed to make one.

The company will be made up of Ultium Home, Ultium Commercial, and Ultium Charge 360. Its products will include bi-directional charging equipment, vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) equipment, stationary storage, solar products, software applications, cloud management tools, microgrid solutions, and hydrogen fuel cells.
Also, GM Energy will be in the virtual power plant business to provide backup power during blackouts or sell power during high energy consumption. The company is partnering with Con Edison, Graniterock, and New Hampshire Electric Cooperative to provide vehicle-to-grid technology. It has already begun offering the service to some in California but will roll it out to more customers in early 2023.
Then, it is working with San Jose-based SunPower to sell solar panels and home energy storage products, with GM Energy building the software and its partners taking charge of the panels and installations. This aspect of its business is set to reach a wider range of users in 2024.
General Motors plans to build its own charging network soon so that owners of its EVs will stop relying on third-party chargers. This is all part of its vision to become a self-sustaining EV seller and clean energy provider.
