Elon Musk’s “Free America Now” Tweet Draws Ire From Americans

Billionaire investor, Elon Musk has drawn the anger of many Americans following his “Free America Now” post on Twitter in the early hours of Wednesday, 29th April 2020.

Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and many other technology firms had posted to his 33.3 million followers:

The above tweet was in no way vague as it clearly referred to the lockdown measures in America. While an overwhelming number of Twitter users had been against Musk’s statement, there were some who supported it.

One person who disagreed with him pointed out that he had made a mistake about the virus in March. He had replied:

A Twitter user endorsing Elon Musk’s “Free America Now” tweet posted:

The COVID-19 pandemic has led many governments to mandate citizens to stay indoors. Businesses have been shut in most countries around the with only essential ones exempted.

With the economy on the verge of collapse, some authorities are reaching decisions to lift the lockdown measures. The strain on finances is visible and this is why many are even willing to risk an infection to make ends meet.

Elon Musk’s Tesla had also suffered under the pandemic. In March, the company had shut down its major car-making plant in San Francisco Bay Area, California. This had been followed by the announcement that Tesla was slashing workers’ pay and furloughing other non-essential workers.

The seeming premature resumption of regular life before the pandemic ends is not happening only in America. In Nigeria, the government also announced that movement will resume in Lagos, the epicenter of the virus in the country.

Despite the lockdown measures, there have been 1.03 million confirmed coronavirus cases in America. This makes up almost one-third of the 3.12 million cases worldwide.

Yet, there are many protests all around the US with people hoisting banners of “Land of the Free”, a statement that likely inspired Elon Musk’s post.

BBC also reports that many states in America are lifting the lockdown measures. But authorities are advising people to still remain careful.

Will the early lifting of the lockdown result in a second wave of the pandemic? Or will it be a smart move to save that will save the economy? Only time will tell.
