After one car started via remote control, it sandwiched a New Yorker to death with another parked car.

Michael Kosanovich, 21, was caught standing between two parked 2002 Lexus IS300s, on 6th December 2019. After which one of them had been started remotely by its owner, the police reported. The car lunged forward and he got caught between it and another car, injuring him fatally.

Bystanders had put in their best efforts to save him, by pushing the cars forward. However, in spite of their best efforts, the car rolled forward and crushed him again.

Emergency services took Mr. Kosanovich to the hospital. However, he had severe trauma to his torso and legs, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). He died the next day, on 7 December 2019, from injuries he sustained.

It was likely a Remote Ignition

According to the NYPD, Mr. Kosanovich had been inspecting one of the vehicles at the time of the accident, with the intention of buying it.

A spokeswoman for Toyota Motor North America, Lexus’ parent company, told BBC News:

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Michael Kosanovich.

Although many details are unknown at this time, we have reached out to local law enforcement to offer support in the investigation.”

Toyota also states that Lexus did not offer a factory-installed remote start in the 2002 IS car model.

This suggests that such a remote ignition system would have most likely been retrofitted to work with the 2002 Lexus IS300 in the accident.

The system’s instruction manual warns users they should never remotely start the engine if they are “unaware of the circumstances surrounding the vehicle”. As it could pose a threat to the lives of anyone in the car’s vicinity.

Another proof that not adhering strictly to user instructions for devices can be fatal.
