Apple TV Plus breaks record at the 2022 Oscars

At an Oscars award dominated by the Will Smith slapping Chris Rock incident, Apple TV Plus became the first streaming service to win Best Picture at the award show.

CODA (or Child of deaf adults) staved off heavy competition from DuneKing RichardThe Power of the DogDon’t Look Up, and others to emerge as the winner of Best Pictures at the 2022 Oscars.

Vendôme Pictures and Pathé Films produced the English remake of the 2014 French-Belgian film titled La Famille Bélier. After its premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Apple TV Plus bought the film’s distribution and co-distribution rights for a festival record of $25 million.

CODA has been garnering positive reviews since it became publicly accessible in August 2021. Aside from being the first film produced and/or distributed by a streaming service to win Best Picture, it is also the first starring predominantly deaf actors.

The film follows Ruby Rossi (played by Emilia Jones), the only hearing member of her deaf family, as she pursues her dream of being a singer while helping her family’s struggling fish business.

Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film and its writer-director Siân Heder also won Best Adapted Screenplay.

Variety claims that Apple spent nearly $10 million on CODA’s Oscar campaign, which was more than the film’s production budget but definitely worth it. In related news, Apple TV Plus has been compiling an engaging number of originals and ordered a series of the continuation of the Monsterverse. It also acquired the rights to air a weekly doubleheader of Major League Baseball games, including live, pre, and postgame shows called Friday Night Baseball.
