Apple will now host its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2020 scheduled for June online. This is part of its new format because of the current coronavirus outbreak.

The WWDC is in its 31st year and this online event will target consumers, press, and developers.

According to Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, the online approach is being adopted due to the “current health situation.” He also says Apple will share more information on the event in the “weeks ahead.”

Schiller’s statement reads:

“We are delivering WWDC 2020 this June in an innovative way to millions of developers around the world, bringing the entire developer community together with a new experience.

“The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world. We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead.”

Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, says he looks forward to the new technologies at the conference.

“I look forward to our developers getting their hands on the new code and interacting in entirely new ways with the Apple engineers building the technologies and frameworks that will shape the future across all Apple platforms,” Federighi added.

Apple will also commit $1 million to local organisations in San Jose, California. The company says this is “to offset associated revenue loss as a result of WWDC 2020’s new online format.”

The WWDC usually starts with a keynote address from CEO, Tim Cook. The address is then streamed to audiences around the world. This new format means the whole event will likely just be streamed entirely online.

Apple will be launching the next versions of its iOS, tvOS, watchOS and macOS at the WWDC.
