When the Basketball season restarts, your favourite NBA players will wear an Oura smart ring as they play to track their health and try to detect symptoms of COVID-19. Other members of each team and league staff will also use the smart rings and its “early illness detection monitoring” system.
Oura Health has confirmed that it is indeed providing the smart rings to the NBA. It says the smart ring will provide early warning signs if a player is in danger of contracting the coronavirus. Oura Health’s Enterprise Illness Management (EIM) platform can also assess the player’s illness risk. It will do this by analysing players’ temperature, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability.
The Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) said the Oura ring enables them “predict the onset of COVID-19 related symptoms (eg fevers, coughing, breathing difficulties, fatigue, and others) three days in advance with over 90% accuracy”.

Health workers on the front line of COVID-19 and researchers from the institute trialled the smart rings.
“We now have compelling evidence for how Oura can support discoveries in illness detection, symptom profiles and recovery. Working with the NBA is the next step in our mission to help safeguard public health,” Harpreet Rai, Oura CEO, said.
The NBA will restart the basketball league on 30th July 2020. Players will stay in three separate Walt Disney World facilities in Orlando, Florida. Additionally, the matches will hold at the ESPN Wide World of Sports facilities.
