WhatsApp had officially announced that it will be introducing disappearing Messages earlier in November 2020. The feature automatically erases messages after a certain period of time and is now finally rolling out to all WhatsApp users.

The update is now available for WhatsApp users worldwide. Users that have downloaded the update and they can now enable the option to delete messages for individual or group chats after seven days.

Users can enable the Disappearing Messages feature for individual and group chats. However, only the group admins will be able to enable disappearing messages in group chats.

After the Disappearing Messages feature is enabled, all new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days. WhatsApp says on its support page that, “this setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat”.

The feature will also wipe out photos and videos after seven days. Even if a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven-day period, the message will disappear. But the user could still get a preview from their notification tab till they open the messaging app.

Additionally, chat participants can still take screenshots or copy the messages before they disappear. They can also save the photos or other content with auto-download on. If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. However, it will be deleted when the user restores from a backup.

The feature is to roll out on all WhatsApp-supported devices including Android, iOS, and Linux-based KaiOS devices. The Disappearing Messages feature is also available on WhatsApp Web and Desktop platform.
