Note: the latter part of this article has been updated to reflect that Amazon has denounced the PS5 price leak.

According to an internet leak, that surfaced late on Wednesday, 10th June 2020, Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) price has left many gaming enthusiasts speechless. The gaming console is allegedly launching at about 763 USD (NGN295,000).

Ahead of the PS5 event on Thursday, 11th June 2020 a UK website leaked what appears to be the price of the console on Amazon. On the page, the site mentions that while the PlayStation 5 “has not yet been released”, interested buyers can preorder it.

Meanwhile, Sony and PlayStation have not made any official comments on this price leak. In fact, relatively little is known about the PlayStation 5 console and many look forward to the event to satisfy their curiosity.

However, if eventually, this price for PS5 becomes official, it will affect the game’s chances of beating its rival, the Xbox Series X. Comparisons and parallels have been drawn between Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X since they were both announced.

The common consensus is that the latest Xbox will cost about 499 USD when it launches. Thus, if Sony prices its own console at more than 30 per cent of its rival’s, it may see its sales do poorly.

Experts in the gaming industry have said that the leaked pricing could be false. But a Twitter user posted that someone had actually ordered the PS5 console.

[Update: 12th June 2020], Amazon denounces PS5 price leak

Amazon has come out to deny the PS5 price leak revealed above and cleared the air of speculation. “This was an error,” an Amazon UK spokesperson told IGN according to a BGR report. The representative of the company explained that it was a dummy price for a dummy product.

Usually, Amazon creates a dummy price for a dummy product and lists it on the website, especially when a major announcement is on hand like yesterday’s PS5 live event. Then, once the price is official, the company will update the information. However, while Sony revealed the console yesterday, it still withheld the price as well as the launch date.
