Twitter is unveiling a new interface for its DMs on the web. The new update will allow users to send and receive DMs without leaving their timelines. The new update bears a semblance with Facebook and LinkedIn’s interface for DMs.

With the old interface, users have to open up a separate section of Twitter’s website to view their DMs. But with this new one, users can easily access their Direct Messages from a pop-up window at the bottom right of their timelines.

Twitter actually announced the interface on 15th July 2020, but it was buried by the news that the accounts of prominent individuals had been hacked later that day.

The massive compromise which was actually a bitcoin scam questioned Twitter’s security. Verified accounts belonging to Elon Musk, Barrack Obama, Warren Buffet, Joe Biden among others were affected in the compromise.

In its response to the hack, Twitter had to limit all the verified accounts from tweeting entirely. The microblogging site then confirmed the compromise of its internal tools contributed to the hack.

The hack and its effects eventually put the new DMs interface at the back priority wise.

Twitter says that the new DMs interface, which has been in development since at least April 2020, will be rolling out for users soon. In January 2020, Twitter introduced emoji reactions, in addition to a new DM search feature in its iOS app that it rolled out in 2019.
