TikTok is raising the age requirement for going live

TikTok is raising the age requirement for going live on the platform, and it is making so that only adults can do so.

In its latest announcement, the video sharing company said that only users that are 18 and above can now host a livestream. It added that the new policy would kick in from November 23. TikTok is changing its former policy, which allowed users that were at least 16 years old, to go live.

“To protect our users and creators and support their well-being, we constantly work to evolve the safeguards we put in place,” the company said.

Also, users will soon be able to target only adults for livestreams that are more appropriate for mature audience. These streams are for things like adult-themed comedy routines or life experiences that kids won’t understand.

However, it is not changing the limit on who can send tips (or payments); which it has pegged at 18 and above since rolling out the feature.

TikTok is doubling down on its Live offering as a way to distinguish itself, now that many other platforms offer short video contents directly in the timeline. As expected, with the effectiveness of streams on the platform, the company is now burdened with the task to ensure that it protects vulnerable users.

Its adult-only policy protects kids, but even older people need to be protected from other dangers like what is now known as ‘exploitative begging’. A BBC report of Syrian families in refugee camps being used as the face of a begging scheme shed more light on this.

In the future, we expect newer policies that are being put in place to ensure that the Live feature is not been used to scam others.
