When it comes to films, I am very enthusiastic and excited about its plot, picture quality, sound, and ending, this is the same for adventure and action video games. How hard and easy can the game be? Is the game’s graphics cool on the eyes? These and more, intrigue me when I come across a video game or a film.
In this article, I am tasked to make a list of some of the worst video game film adaptations. Though some are not as bad as others, this article is based on opinions of mine and a few colleagues. Without any more preambles, let’s dive in:
Super Mario Bros
Released: May 28, 1993
World Box office: $20,915,465
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 21%
Did you know, the Nintendo classic Super Mario Bros was the very first video game film? Released on 28th May 1993, it had the talented Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper as part of the film’s cast. However, it failed to show any semblance of the friendliness and colour that kids associate with the game. The plot wasn’t properly scripted to soothe the palate of many of the game’s lovers.

Mortal Kombat
Released: August 18, 1995
World Box Office: $122,195,920
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 46%
The film is rated as best of the worst by many across the gaming world. Looking back at its pictures and fight scenes, one can visibly point out its poorly choreographed scenes and weak performances.
“The filmmakers try to solve the problem of turning an experience which merely consists of a series of fights into a story by… ignoring it, presenting a film which merely consists of a series of fights.” – English journalist and film critic, Kim Newman said of Mortal Kombat live-action.
Street Fighter
Released Date: December 23, 1994
World Box Office: $99,423,521
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 11%
Truth be told, this film was only made bearable due to Jean Claude Van Damme being the main cast. The film failed its audience, as it tried to do too much.
Prince of Persia
Released Date: May 28, 2010
World Box Office: $336,365,676
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 37%
How can we unsee this? PoP (Prince of Persia) promised to be an epic film with Jake Gyllenhaal acting as the main cast but failed to do justice in the eyes of film lovers. It had few passable action scenes, but it’s hard to treat this snaked-oil epic fantasy as anything other than another game-to-film letdown. Too Bad.
Alone in the Dark
Released Date: January 28, 2005
World Box Office: $10,442,808
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 1%
Directed by Uwe Boll, the film stars Christian Slater as supernatural detective Edward Carnby and also features a pairing of Tara Reid and Stephen Dorff. This film was a critical failure and received an overwhelmingly negative review.
It won Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Actress in The Stinkers Bad film Awards; A Los Angeles-based group of film buffs and film critics devoted to honouring the worst films of the year.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
Released Date: January 11, 2008
World Box Office: $13,097,915
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 4%
Another film, another bad day. Holding a 4% rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 50 reviews, the film won awards of Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Supporting Actress, with Uwe Boll winning Worst Director on the Golden Raspberry Awards, a parody award show honouring the worst of cinema films.
