Sony teases next-gen virtual reality headset PlayStation VR2 ahead of 2023 launch

PlayStation VR2 is the next-gen virtual reality headset that gaming giants Sony has lined up for early 2023. The rumours have been piling on about the upcoming gaming gadget and we can finally sigh in relief that the company has confirmed it.

The new VRs will be upgraded versions of its 2016 one, with the company promising a greater sense of presence while playing with them.

PlayStation did not mention the price yet, but Sony revealed some important details such as specifications. PlayStation VR2 will have a 4,000 x 2,040 OLED panel resolution that supports refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

Additionally, it will have a 110-degree FOV (field of view) to give a better playing experience. There would be a cinematic mode of 1080 pixels for streaming PS5 user interface and other non-VR games on the virtual screen.

With a see-through view, which can be toggled on and off, the headset allows users to see their surroundings while wearing it. Also, it will launch with front cameras that make it easier to find things, such as the PS VR2 sense controller, if you drop it or wear the visor first. Streamers also get a Broadcast feature to share their gameplay on Twitch or YouTube via the PS5 HD camera.

This second-generation virtual reality PlayStation headset can work well without users having to install cameras in their rooms for tracking or adjustments. Thanks to its four integrated cameras that track hand and controller movements, it has all those in-built.

To improve the playing experience, PlayStation VR2 can deliver vibrations to emulate in-game sensations, and when the character stops sprinting in a game, for example, the headset motor whirrs or throbs to seem like the player’s pulse rate is elevated.

In preparation for the gadget’s launch, PlayStation has 20 major games to reveal alongside it. Already, the company showcased one of them, Horizon Call of the Mountain, at CES 2022. Allegedly, there would also be a VR version of Resident Evil Village and No Man’s Sky.
