PlayStation announces mobile gaming entry

PlayStation is making a move into the mobile gaming space after announcing that it was building a mobile division. According to Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, this marks the company’s expansion beyond consoles.

The announcement was to break the news about acquiring Savage Game Studios, whose co-founders made Clash of Clans and Angry Birds. However, Hulst assured loyal customers that this didn’t mean its focus was shifting away from the console community.

PlayStation has been doing well with the PC gaming industry and just released Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for gamers without a console. Also, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will come to PC later in 2022.

For its new venture into the mobile space, the aim would be to reach new audiences unfamiliar with the brand and its games. To do that, the company created an independent PlayStation Studios Mobile Division separate from the console development arm.

Savage Game Studios is the first mobile game developer to join the new division, and it may not be the last one. It is not clear how much Sony bought the company, but we estimate that it would be more than $5 million because the company had raised $4.4 million in funding a year before the acquisition.

It could be a good deal for PlayStation as analysts estimate spending in the mobile gaming industry to reach $136 billion in 2022. Thus, it makes sense for a gaming giant like Sony PlayStation to get into the space, too, and corner some market share for itself.

There are several avenues for the company to expand in mobile gaming. For example, Sony’s smartphone arm could focus on gaming smartphones and take on the ASUS ROG brand. It could also create mobile versions of its old games and bank on nostalgia.

We will have to wait and see what PlayStation plans to do in the mobile gaming industry. Expectedly, it wants to hit the ground running with Savage Game Studios’ already-made structure.
