Revd Tola Oyediran, First Daughter Of Late Obafemi Awolowo Dies At 89

Rev Tola Oyediran, the first daughter of late nationalist and governor of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo has died.

She reportedly passed away during the noon hours of Friday, October 16th, 2020.

 

Before her death, she was the chairman of African Newspapers Plc, the publishers of Tribune. Tolani Oyediran was married to Professor A. B. O. O. Oyediran, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. She was to celebrate her 80th birthday on December 1st.

 

Rev Tolani Oyediran reportedly died peacefully in her sleep. She’d shown no signs of a previous ailment.With her death, the only surviving child of the Awololow dynasty is Dr Olatokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu.

A statement signed by the family reads: “The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Professor Olukayode Oyediran regret to announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of his wife of 57 years, Mrs Omotola Olubunmi Oyediran.

 

“Mrs Oyediran was the first daughter of the late Chief Obafemi and Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo. She was a very loving, kind and generous mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty.”

 

“She had a very large family because her heart was large, and her embrace wide. Tolani Oyediran was a friend of the poor, needy and downtrodden. They called her “Iya Alanu Oke Bola.”

 

“She was full of positive energy. She will be remembered with great affection and sorely missed. Born in 1940, Revd Oyediran, 79, was expected to mark her 80th birthday December 1. May her soul rest in perfect peace”
