Short video streaming service, Quibi has revealed it has been downloaded close to 2 million times just after one week of its initial launch. The app only features videos of 10 minutes or shorter and launched on 6th April 2020.

Quibi at the moment runs only on smartphones and tablets. The company, however, says it is fast-tracking a program to make Quibi videos watchable on larger devices. It says this will make it easier for groups of people to view shows together.

Quibi Boss, Meg Whitman said to CNBC that she didn’t believe the COVID-19 pandemic hurt its launch. “It turns out people have in-between moments at home. We don’t actually think it hurt us,” she said.

Some analysts were predicting that the coronavirus lockdown would make it difficult for Quibi to attract users. Their expectations were that people being stuck in their homes would make them prefer longer videos that could be seen on larger devices like TVs.

Ms Whitman and Quibi’s founder Jeffrey Katzenberg say they also want the app to compete with TV and movie streaming services like Disney Plus and Netflix and social media video platforms like YouTube and Tiktok. The exact number of downloads is around 1.7 million, however, Quibi has fared impressively given the time.

New users can get up now for a 90-day free trial with the service. After the trial period, subscribers will have to pay $4.99 a month for the ad-supported version, and $7.99 for the version without ads.
