Google has announced that it is shutting down its internal Stadia game development division. The company is making the decision because it aims to refocus Stadia to stream games from existing developers as opposed to developing its own games for the service.

“Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games,” Phil Harrison, a vice president at Google and general manager for Stadia said in a blog post.

Google is shutting down both its Los Angeles and Montreal game studios. Both studios had existed under Stadia Games and Entertainment banner.

Google says that “most of the SG&E [Stadia Games and Entertainment] team will be moving on to new roles”. However, Jade Raymond, Ubisoft and EA industry veteran who led the Stadia studio team, will leave the company entirely.

Despite shutting down Google Stadia, the service and its $9.99 Stadia Pro subscription service, will still be in existence, for now. “Near-planned” games will also still be released on Stadia. In the future, Stadia could likely be another option to play the same games available on PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC.
