Nintendo has increased the sales forecasts for its Switch console after posting its earnings for the holiday quarter which shows that the Switch sold more consoles than ever. The forecast raise is for its fiscal year ending on 31st March 2021.
Nintendo sold 11.57 million consoles in total, bringing the Switch sales close to 80 million since its launch in 2017. The increase in forecast estimate means that Nintendo expects to sell 26.5 million Switch units in the fiscal year. This will also boost its net profit estimate by 33 percent to about $3.82 billion.
Also, the number reveals that the Switch has now outsold the Nintendo 3DS in terms of lifetime sales. The 3DS sold a total of 75.94 million units before its production was ended. Nintendo sold just about 730,000 3DS games in the last quarter, further highlighting the Switch’s dominance.

The company also made significant software sales in the quarter, selling about 76 million units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold more than 30 million copies for the first time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokémon Sword/Shield also have now sold over 20 million copies each.
In its last quarter, Nintendo had raised its fiscal year forecast to 24 million Switch units from 19 million. The company cited the increased demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic as responsible for its increased forecast. In its last holiday quarter, Nintendo shipped about 11 million consoles, a number it has now improved upon.
The company expects new titles such as Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise, and the expanded Wii U port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury to further boost sales for its next quarter as they will come bundled with the Switch consoles.
