Google removes Donald Trump Truth Social app from Play Store

Google has removed Donald Trump’s Truth Social app from its Play Store over concerns about its lack of content moderation measures.

The former US president made good on his promise to bring a social media app where anything goes. Following the several checks and labels that accompanied his tweets, Trump engaged in tirades and continued to go against the company until he was eventually kicked off the platform.

He accused Twitter (then Facebook) of suppressing the truth and targeting Republicans. Then, he set out to create a parallel forum where users would be free to post what they wanted.

However, giving free rein to whatever comes to your mind is not part of Google’s services. The company wants apps to be responsible for what it allows out there.

“On Aug. 19, we notified Truth Social of several violations of standard policies in their current app submission and reiterated that having effective systems for moderating user-generated content is a condition of our terms of service for any app to go live on Google Play,” Google said in a statement.

With nearly 44% of smartphone users in the US relying on the Android OS, they would be unable to download the app.

Truth Social has said that it would find a way to meet Google Play Store terms and conditions, according to a report by Axios. However, Trump Media and Technology Group CEO Devin Nunes is saying something different.

“When are we going to be available on Android? Well, look, that’s up to the Google Play store. We’re waiting on them to approve us, I don’t know what’s taking so long. It sure would be nice if they would approve us,” he said on a podcast.

In response, Google said that Devin Nunes was misleading the public by making it seem like it was their responsibility for the delay. Then, the company published a press release backing its CEO’s initial statement.

For now, the Truth Social app is still up on Apple Store, and its most prominent user is Donald Trump, with four million followers or thereabout.
