Donald Trump’s Truth Social is now available for download on Google Play Store after being banned for some months. The initial ban was over the platform’s lack of content moderation policies.

Truth Social was supposed to be an answer to Twitter and Facebook’s censorship, which saw the former president kicked off both platforms. Advertising itself as an open and free social media forum where everything goes, the idea was to appeal to people dissatisfied with the way the usual platforms run.

However, it turns out that even host locations require a level of responsibility from app developers. In a statement, Google had clarified that Truth Social would be available on the Play Store, if it adhered to developer guidelines such as the requirement to effectively moderate user-generated content and delete objectionable posts that incite violence or endanger lives.

While everyone in the US can now download the app, as it is already available on the App Store, it still faces some daunting challenges. For one, it has financial restrictions because of a repeatedly delayed SPAC. Also, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating a claim that the company’s future is overly reliant on Donald Trump’s popularity, which could cause problems if, as he is wont to do, run into some controversy.

With Twitter’s impending acquisition by Elon Musk, Trump could return to the platform soon. Before his ban, he had more than 80 million followers and if his account is reinstated, there is no telling if he would continue his pursuit of a competing platform.
