Facebook says it’s canceling all its conferences with gatherings of more than 50 people until June 2021. It will also slowly ease its employees in returning to the office due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

CEO, Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page that some of the events would instead hold virtually.

“Guidance from health experts is that it won’t be advisable to have large groups of people get together for a while,” Zuckerberg added in the post.

Zuckerberg confirms that Facebook would require a majority of its employees to work from home. It will do this until at least June 2020 with the options open to doing the same in the summer. The company will also be extending its no business travel policy until at least June 2020.

“We’re slowing our plans to return to the office in order to prioritize helping the rest of our community and local economy to get back up and running first.

“Most Facebook employees are fortunate to be able to work productively from home, so we feel a responsibility to allow people who don’t have this flexibility to access shared public resources first,” Zuckerberg said.

The company’s boss, however, admitted that critical employees who can’t work remotely may return sooner to the offices.

“A small percent of our critical employees who can’t work remotely, like content reviewers working on counter-terrorism or suicide and self-harm prevention, and engineers working on complex hardware, may be able to return sooner, but overall, we don’t expect to have everyone back in our offices for some time,” he said.

Facebook had previously canceled F8, its biggest annual conference, in January 2020 due to coronavirus concerns.
