Google will now be giving its employees up to 14 weeks of paid family leave. The company is helping its employees combine family and work responsibilities by giving them an additional 8 weeks as the COVID-19 pandemic rages.

The policy will only apply to its full-time global workforce and not its thousands of vendors, according to a Google spokesperson. Google has more than 100,000 full-time employees.

The benefits for TVCs are to be decided by their employers, the spokesperson said. TVCs, which means “temps, vendors and contractors” in Google parlance, account for at least half of Google’s workforce.

The leave can be taken in increments, a Google spokesperson added. This means that employees doing half-days can get up to 28 weeks of paid leave. The leave will also not reduce the employee’s standard paid leave.

The spokesperson further explained that the aim is to give employees flexibility so they can care for their families during the lockdowns.

In the note to its employees, Google said it realizes employees are struggling with a range of issues during this crisis. It also says its managers will do their best to render as much help as they can.

Almost 1,000 Google employees signed an internal letter thanking the company for assisting them during the pandemic.

Google’s move is quite similar to Microsoft giving it employees 12 weeks of paid parental leave. Google, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft had promised to continue paying their hourly workers even though they are have stopped coming to work due to the social distancing guidelines.
