The Canadian government has annouced plans to receive 1.3 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023. 
The Canadian Minister for immigration, Marco Mendicino annouced the news in a statement on Friday, October 30th. The country is throwing its doors open to facilitate economic growth. This is in a bid to make up for the losses incurred by the Coronavirus pandemic.
“Before the pandemic, our government’s intention to stimulate the economy ahead through immigration was pretentious. Now it’s indispensable,” Mendico wrote in the statement.
“The key to both short-term economic recovery and long-term prosperity is immigration. As with every other aspect of our lives, the pandemic has affected migration to Canada. The new target is about 50,000 per year higher than the previous goal”

Here’s how the Immigration plan looks like
- 235,000 new permanent residents in 2021,
- 411,000 in 2022 and
- 421,000 in 2023.
Canada closed its borders for new immigrants in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
However, in August, the country welcomed 128, 425 new immigrants. This is however only half of the 341,000 immigrants mark it had set for 2020.
Speaking on the new immigration plan, Robert Falconer, a foreigner and emigration policy researcher at the University of Calgary School of Public Policy tweeted on Friday saying if the administration makes do its words, it would be “The most imminent years on record since 1911.”
