Research firm, NPD has declared April 2020 a great month for video games as sales broke records in the US. Video games recorded over $1.5 billion in sales, representing an increase of over 73% from April 2019.

The figures include software, hardware, accessories, and game card sales, beating the former record of $1.2 billion set in April 2008.

“This is by far the wildest one month of data I’ve ever seen. We are talking unprecedented levels of spending and demand in the US market for video games. This is a new record high in reported spend for an April month, eclipsing the $1.2 billion generated in April 2008,” according to Mat Piscatalla, a video game industry analyst with NPD.

Gaming Hardware also did particularly well, realising about $40 million in sales. This represents a 163% jump from April 2020. Nintendo Switch set a new hardware sales record. The game console beat the previous record set by Nintendo Wii sales in 2009.

“Year-to-date 2020 tracked spending across video game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards reached $4.5 billion. [That’s up] 12% when compared to a year ago,” said Piscatella.
