Amazon has announced that it will pay out $500 million in one-time bonuses to its front-line employees. The bonuses are a ‘thank you’ to its employees who were most at risk of contracting the coronavirus.
Employes who worked for Amazon through the month of June 2020 will qualify for the bonuses.
“Our front-line operations teams have been on an incredible journey over the last few months, and we want to show our appreciation with a special one-time Thank You bonus,” Dave Clark, Amazon’s Senior Vice President for worldwide operations, wrote in a note to workers.
For a breakdown of the $500 million, Amazon will give $500 as bonuses to each full-time Amazon and Whole Foods Market employee. It will also give $500 to each of its delivery service partner drivers, while part-time employees will get $250.

Amazon will pay $1,000 to all front-line Amazon and Whole Foods Market leaders, while delivery service partner owners will get $3,000 each. The company will also pay $150 to Amazon Flex drivers who worked for more than 10 hours in June 2020.
Last month, Amazon ended a $2 pay bump it began in March 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, some of its workers criticised the move to end the pay raise prematurely, but after the new bonuses were announced, some Amazon employees celebrated on social media.
The company was essential to the distribution of essential items amid the strict shelter-in-place guidelines. Therefore, Amazons’ employees were definitely at risk of contracting the deadly virus, making the bonuses well deserved.
