Former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings Dies Of Covid-19

Ex Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings is dead. He died of coronavirus complications according to Ghanaian media outlets.Jerry Rawlings - Wikipedia
According to reports, he died today, Thursday, November 12th, 2020 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH). He was reportedly admitted to the hospital 6 days before. He fell ill immediately after his mother’s burial which took place 3 weeks ago.

 

Rawlings came to power as flight lieutenant for the Ghana Air Force after a coup d’etat in 1979. Prior to this, he’d attempted a coup in May 1979 against the military government weeks before the scheduled democratic elections. He was tried publicly and also sentenced to death. Rawlings was however sprung from prison by his soldier comrades in June of the same year. They went to lead a successful coup against General Fred Akuffo which brought him into power.

He handed over to a civilian government but snatched back power in 1981, December 31st installing himself as the Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

 

In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the military and formed a political party, National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Under the umbrella of the NDC, he contested and won elections to become the first democratic president of the Ghanaian Fourth Republic.

 

He was re-elected in 1996 and went on to serve more four years. His tenure ended in 2001. Jerry John Rawlings then endorsed his vice-president John Atta Mills as a presidential candidate in 2000.

 

He died at the age of 73.
