100 Private Companies And 9 Federal Agencies Affected By SolarWinds Hack

The US government has provided an update to figures on the number of companies and federal agencies it believes were affected by the recent SolarWinds hack. Deputy National Security Advisor Anne Neuberger says that attacks were launched from inside the US.

“As of today, 9 federal agencies and about 100 private sector companies were compromised,” Neuberger said in a briefing. She also declined to name specific organizations she believed were responsible. The hackers are also believed to be “likely of Russian origin”.

It is worthy to note that as Neuberger cautioned, the investigation is still in its “beginning stages” and that “additional compromises” may be found. The latest numbers are quite lower than the 250 federal agencies and businesses previously reported to have been compromised.

Up to 18,000 SolarWinds customers are thought to have originally received the malicious code. However, the hackers did not attempt to gain additional access to all of them.

Again, the tech companies compromised in the attack means that there’s a potential for future attacks. Companies like Intel, Nvidia, Cisco, Microsoft, Belkin, and VMWare have all reportedly seen computers on their networks infected. The US Treasury, Commerce, State, Energy, and Homeland Security departments were also compromised by the Solarwinds hack.

Neuberger says the government is planning an executive action to fix the security problems identified. She also indicates that “discussions are underway” about how to respond to the group that’s responsible.
