Reports Indicate That SolarWinds Attack Are Much Worse Than Feared

According to reports, the SolarWinds attack, which is the worst attack in US cyber history is actually much worse. According to a New York Times report, the hack reportedly affected some 250 federal agencies and businesses.

Microsoft has previously said that the attack compromised SolarWinds’ Orion monitoring and management software. The compromise allows them to “impersonate any of the organization’s existing users and accounts; including highly privileged accounts.”

Microsoft also said the hackers were able to “view source code in a number of source code repositories,” but, the hacked accounts didn’t have any permission to modify any code or systems. However, it says there was “no evidence of access to production services or customer data”. It also says there is a lack of indication of its system’s involvement in attacking others.

Senator Mark Warner, a ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told the Times that the hack is “much, much worse” than his initial fear. “The size of it keeps expanding. It’s clear the United States government missed it,” he said.

According to The Times, the early-warning sensors that the US Cyber Command and the NSA had placed inside foreign networks to detect potential attacks appear to have failed. The Times also feels that it’s possible that the US government’s focus on the November elections may have reduced available resources and capacity.
