Videoconferencing service, Zoom, is looking to cap a wonderful year by expanding beyond video chat, specifically email and calendar services, according to a report by The Information. Zoom has had a wonderful 2020, with its stock price rising more than 500 percent as it became an essential service because of a surge in remote work as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Zoom may begin testing the web email service, as soon as 2021, according to the report. The calendar app appears is however reportedly farther off and with a lack of clarity surrounding its development. Some reports say the calendar service isn’t even in development yet.

However, if they take off, both services could help Zoom sustain their winning run even if companies start returning their employees to their offices and the reliance on video conferencing reduces.  Again with the COVID-19 vaccine distribution potentially picking up in the new year, it seems like a smart move.

The move will also partly erase the advantage some of Zoom’s biggest rivals have over the company. Two of its biggest rivals Microsoft and Google have their own email offerings. Microsoft has its Teams service bundled with its Office 365 platform while Google has its own offerings. Both platforms also offer calendar, email, and videoconferencing products.

So in fact Zoom choosing not to keep up makes it a single-purpose platform, and that’s dangerous long-term.
