Slack has begun rolling out a new feature allowing anyone using the service to DM one another. The messaging service had first announced the feature in October 2020.

The feature is designed for companies working with partners or clients. Users can also use it to message friends at other companies. This feature builds on Slack’s collaboration with Connect, which began appearing last year.

“Slack Connect is our answer to fully replacing email. The idea [with Connect DMs] is that it’s easy and quick to send a note to a partner, vendor, or an agency that one is working with,” Brad Mattick, vice president of product marketing at Slack said at the time.

Slack Connect allows businesses better collaborate through shared channels. Sending a DM requires forwarding a special link to start a conversation and users may need a Slack admin approval depending on how your organization has set up Slack.

Paid Slack users will have immediate access to Slack Connect DMs. The company says its plan is to roll out the feature to all teams, including free users, soon.

Slack is also working on a new way to link together multiple organizations, creating a private business network. This feature is set to launch later in the year and will include unified directories, channel discovery, and shared apps.

Slack had been pushing for the concept of intercompany communications for a while. It began with the introduction of shared channels in 2017. Shared Channels allowed two companies to create chat groups for shared projects and more recently with the launch of Slack Connect in June 2020.
