US Justice Department Charges Six Russians For Hacking Campaigns

The US Justice Department has charged six Russians over their involvement in an extensive hacking campaign. It includes the Petya ransomware attacks that targeted Ukraine in 2015. The department also alleges that the campaigns targeted Georgia, the French elections, the 2018 winter Olympics, and investigations into the poisoning of former Russian military officer Sergei Skripal.

Russia will most likely not extradite the defendants, therefore it is unlikely that they will ever stand trial. The country is likely going to be uncooperative towards the investigations as in previous indictments. This investigation took more than two years and is due to the hard work of the FBI.

“The exceptional talent and dedication of our teams in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Oklahoma City who spent years tracking these members of the GRU is unmatched. These criminals underestimated the power of shared intelligence, resources and expertise through law enforcement, private sector, and international partnerships,” Michael Christman, FBI special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office, said in a statement.

Perhaps the most devastating of the campaigns was against Ukrainian power grids in 2015. The attacks at first compromised internal networks at all three of the country’s major energy distribution companies. This in turn made computers inoperable and with more than 200,000 people left without power in the dead of winter.

In 2016 the group also launched another attack against the country’s Ministry of Finance and State Treasury Service. The FBI alleges that the Russians behind the international hacking campaigns are furthering the country’s interests.
