Uber will soon require its drivers to take a selfie in-app to prove they are wearing facemasks before they can pick up passengers. These are part of the measures the company is putting in place to enforce safety measures in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Many countries around the world are moving to a new phase of recovery. We’ve built a new product experience for a new normal,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said during a press call.

The new requirements will feature a redesign in its app that contains a “Go Online Checklist” of items. This includes Uber drivers taking a selfie wearing a facemask, and having no one sitting in the front seat.

“The next time you open the app things are going to look a little different for both riders and drivers,” Khosrowshahi said.

The changes are in anticipation that orders will increase as many businesses are beginning to reopen. Khosrowshahi notes that many countries are starting to ease their social distancing guidelines and thus the company’s focus is now shifting to the safety of its drivers and passengers.

“We have put in several checks and balances because this is something that is really shared accountability. If the driver approaches and the rider sees the driver is not wearing a mask, they can cancel the trip. They don’t have to get in the car,” Uber’s head of safety products, Sachin Kansal said in an interview with CNN.

Uber says it will not be penalising riders for such cancelations. It, however, says drivers who repeatedly flout the rule may be removed.
