Tesla has agreed to recall 134,951 Model S and Model X vehicles. The vehicles have an issue with their touchscreen displays with US auto safety regulators seeking the recall in January according to a post on a government website.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had made the recall request in a letter dated 13th January 2021 to Tesla. The regulator said that it had tentatively concluded the 2012-2018 Model S and 2016-2018 Model X vehicles pose safety concerns. The agency asked Tesla to provide it “with a full explanation of its decision by 27th January 2021 if it didn’t agree.

It also said touchscreen failures pose significant safety issues. These issues include; the loss of rearview/backup camera images and windshield defogging and defrosting systems that “may decrease the driver’s visibility in inclement weather”.

The agency had said it sought the recall after considering “Tesla’s technical briefing presentation…and evaluated Tesla’s assertions”. The demand made it strange as it’s typically unusual for agencies to demand recalls. Usually, automakers would agree to a recall after discussions with the regulatory agency.

NHTSA also said that; “during our review of the data, Tesla provided confirmation that all units will inevitably fail given the memory device’s finite storage capacity”.

NHTSA noted that “Tesla has implemented several over-the-air updates in an attempt to mitigate some of the issues…but tentatively believes these updates are procedurally and substantively insufficient”. The agency also notes that under law, “vehicle manufacturers are required to conduct recalls to remedy safety-related defects.”
