Tesla in trouble with US government over unexpected braking

Known as ‘phantom braking,’ Tesla self-driving cars have been known to apply brakes for no seeable reason and the US government is now looking into the company’s tech.

The argument that cars can not perfectly drive themselves yet hinges largely on the autonomous industry leaders, Tesla. However, it is not doing the job of convincing the authorities properly as it has been plagued by several issues that continue to create doubts.

The most recent is the issue of Tesla cars automatically applying brakes for no reason that the driver can see. According to a report by The Verge, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent an inquisition into the issue.

The body alleged that 758 people have come to the government with complaints about their Tesla braking unexpectedly. Besides false braking, there have also been reports about avoidable crashes, injuries, property damages, and death associated with the firm’s cars.

The company has to come up with a reply to the NHTSA as soon as June 20 but it can ask for more time if it needs it. Although, there has been no crashes, injuries or death related to this particular issue.

Some industry expects believe that the decision to remove radar sensors in favour of relying exclusively on cameras may be behind the false braking issue. At this time, a formal recall of all affected vehicles is not on the table yet but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated a preliminary evaluation which is required before a recall.
