Tesla delivered 310,000+ vehicles in Q1 2022, Elon Musk says quarter was exceptionally difficult

Tesla delivered 310,048 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022, with most of them being Model 3 and Model Y cars.

It appears that ‘difficult’ means something different at Tesla because its CEO claimed that Q1 2022 was ‘exceptionally difficult,’ when his company shipped more than 310,000 vehicles in that period.

Not to disregard what Musk was talking about, Tesla’s Shanghai factory had been briefly closed due to COVID-19 policies and supply chain problems. But, it is far from being a bad year for the carmakers.

In fact, its report showed that it surpassed the 308,000+ deliveries it made in the last quarter (Q4 2021) and blew away the 184,000 shipments it made in Q1 2021. Also, its popular brands — Model 3 and Model Y — sold the most again, with the Model S and X coming behind.

Tesla was not kidding when it revealed its plans to be churning out as many vehicles as possible. In Q1 2022 alone, the company built 305,407 cars despite interruptions. With plans to also start production in its Berlin, Germany, factory, the electric car maker could be shipping out more cars than it is currently doing.

About 4% of the vehicles that Tesla shipped in the first quarter of 2022 were ‘subject to operating lease accounting.’ The company chose to hold on to its earnings report until April 20, when it will post financial results such as net income and cash flow results.

“Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles,” the company said regarding its pending public earnings call.
