Hyundai becomes first to auto-pilot an entire ship across the Atlantic Ocean

Avikus, a subsidiary of Hyundai, claims to have become the first to complete autonomous navigation of a ship across the Atlantic ocean. However, as you will see in this article, the achievement comes with some ‘buts.’

First and foremost, the Avikus AI-powered HiNAS 2.0 system used to steer the ship only did so for about half its journey. Members of the crew had to eventually take over and complete the ship’s journey. In addition, the route was picked out specifically for this autonomous steering and it had no need for docking at ports, navigating packed waterways and so on.

Yet, there are quite some noteworthy feats that this first-of-its-kind trip achieved.

For one, while guiding the Prism Courage (the ship’s name), the system noted other ships, the weather, and changing wave heights. It also managed to improve the fuel efficiency for the ship because it used an optimised route, while reducing emissions by five per cent.

The entire distance that the HiNAS took the ship amounted to 12,427 mile. During this time, the crew members were able to take time off.

Although the tech is still relatively new, Avikus has plans of taking it into the market by the end of 2022. With the ability to improve efficiency, reduce carbon emission, assist shorthanded crews, improve safety and more, it could change the shipping industry massively.

At this time, the system is still on Level 2 autonomy, which is regarded as partial automation and still has three more levels to go to attain its maximum potential.
