Rogers Ofime’s “Voiceless” Is A Tale Of Insurgency, Love And Tears

“Voiceless” is that film that reminds you of the 2014 Chibok girls abduction by Boko Haram insurgents. It revolves around the story of Goni (Adam Garba) and Salma (Asabe Madaki)  two victims kidnapped by a heartless “Sojojin Aljanna (The Army of Paradise)” terrorist gang. "Voiceless"

While Salma and her fellow schoolgirls are abducted to stop them from acquiring western education, Goni and his close friend Bulus (Abba Zaki) are forced to work for the insurgents as skilled mechanics. In the terrorist camp, the girls are r* ped, and the punishment for any attempt to escape is death.

Goni and Salma fall in love and their love grows deeper every day, which results in him impregnating her. She gives birth to a baby boy after their 300-day captivity. However, amid betrayals, and deep distrust between the gang leaders, Lafiya Shugaba (Yakubu Muhammad) and Banza (Uzee Usman), the abductees are able to escape."Voiceless"

Unfortunately, after regaining freedom, they face another pitched battle for acceptance from their loved ones. Salma’s father, Sani Mu’azu, is of the opinion that a terrorist got his only daughter pregnant.  He becomes incandescent with rage and threatens to kill her and the baby.

The characters did a good job shielding light on the issue of Insurgency that has been a major problem in the northern part of Nigeria.

However like every other work of art, “Voiceless” has its shortcomings especially in the part of its subtitle. There were errors in the film’s English subtitle, more editorial work before the release of the film would have solved this issue.

“Voiceless” is currently streaming on Netflix and it is one film you will enjoy watching even with its gory scenes.
