Nigeria Election 2023: Electoral Body Cites Technology Problems

  • Nigeria Election 2023 hit a snag as INEC’s IReV portal for live updates of results from polling units experience downtime.
  • The commission explained that the problem with the portal is due to scaling it to manage a larger sample than it has been used for in the past.
  • INEC has made it clear that the problem with IReV uploads will not affect vote declaration at the national collation centre.

Nigeria’s independent electoral body, INEC, has admitted to citizens the results viewing portal (IReV) is experiencing challenges. As of when this article was published, it has passed 48 hours since registered voters began casting votes in the 2023 elections but only 61,250 polling units (out of 176,846) results have been uploaded on the portal.

As early as Sunday, the commission acknowledged the technical failures and sought to clear the air that the website was not under attack.

“The Commission is aware of challenges with the INEC Results Viewing Portal. Unlike in off-season elections where the portal was used, it has been relatively slow and unsteady. The Commission regrets this setback, especially because of the importance of IReV in our results management process,” Festus Okoye said in a statement published by PUNCH.

Okoye, who is the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, explained that the hitches were expected because they were migrating the system to collate election inputs of greater magnitude than it was used to.

“Our technical team is working assiduously to solve all the outstanding problems, and users of the IReV would have noticed improvements since last night. We also wish to assure Nigerians that results from the Polling Units, copies of which were issued to political parties, are safe on both the BVAS and the IReV portal,” he added.

While Okoye mentions that the portal is important, the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said that it is not a condition for vote declaration at the national collation centre, as paraphrased on Stears Elections live blog.

What this means is that the announcements of the results will continue despite groanings on the credibility of the numbers because they have not appeared on the IReV portal.
